It’s finally here, the first “full” trailer for Batman: The Killing Joke and I didn’t think it was possible to be even more excited than I already was. The movie looks great and the fact that the original players from Batman: The Animated Series are back make this an even more anticipated movie than BVS in my book. This looks like a 100% faithful retelling of the harrowing Alan Moore penned tale from 1988 comic book, The Killing Joke
A couple of weeks ago we were treated to the first teaser trailer and a great behind-the-scenes video that shed light on this iconic story ( which you can see, Here ), so I was surprised to see something else so soon. I guess San Diego is coming up fast, which is where they are premiering the flick.
Before comic book movies became what they are today, I always thought animation was the only way to tell a great comic book story. This looks to be a testament to that. This is the only way to tell this dark and gritty story while retaining it’s comic book roots.
This is also DC Animated’s first foray into the “R” rated world of cinema. I hope it sells like gangbusters so we can get other adult tales in animated form, like Grant Morrison’s unnerving 1989 graphic novel, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mike Grell’s 1987 3-part story, Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters, and Alan Moore’s take on Swamp Thing. Hell, Morrison’s run on Animal Man would make for a great mind warping “R” rated flick.
Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (Joker)return to play the World’s Greatest Detective and his Arch-nemesis. Also regulars from the Batman animated series Tara Strong (Batgirl) and Ray Wise (Commissioner Gordon) return. The movie is premiering at San Diego Comic-Con then will be released on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital Formats shortly afterwards.
